Mr. Fix-It is back on the internet after a few months absence and it's good to be back. We're still remodeling this site with a new look so we ask you to be patient and visit us often to see the changes we're making to have this site provide you with good information about home improvement, energy and good contractors and service people. We want this website to be both a stand alone resource and a support for the Mr. Fix-It radio show and other endeavors. What do you expect the weather to be? You just come up with a way to deal with it. That’s what I’d like to talk about, finding ways to stay cool and comfortable at home during the heat of summer.
When I first moved to Denver, way back when, it didn’t seem that too many folks had home air conditioning. Many depended on evaporative coolers (swamp coolers) or whole house fans. Many people I knew at the time just depended on an open window and a box fan. But things have changed. A combination of factors has made refrigerated air or air conditioners, the preferred way of cooling for most folks in our area over the last couple of decades. That doesn’t mean that the former favorites are no good. To the contrary, Whole house fans and swamp coolers still work very well at keeping us cool if you understand that they and even air conditioners have their shortcomings. More
