Guests For The Mr. Fix-It Show For Saturday September 20, 2008

 Dr, Lon Gallup pays another visit to the Mr. Fix-It show this weekend. Lon is national sales manager for Ultra Kote Products, maker of stucco and plaster products for the trades. Lon has taught at Cornell University, contributed to the original Time-Life home improvement series and has extensive experience in the solar energy industry. Also on the show will be plumber Joe Greenberg. Mr. Fix-It is heard Saturdays from 1 until 3 PM on AM-760.

The topic is taking advantage of the foreclosure situation for fix and flip opportunities. Kim Hubbard or Merchants Mortgage, long-time fix-and flip developer Byron Horvath and remodeler Eric Listow join Mr. Fix-It

 October 11: Architect Pam McFadden, energy audit and design expert Paul Kriescher of Lightly Treading, Debbie Weingardt of Bestway Insulation and engineer and solar energy expert Willie Mein of custom solar visit Mr. Fix-It to talk about the energy future of our homes and businesses

If you’re like me, you probably scratch your head and wonder about all the hyperbole on radio and television about the hot weather. It’s late summer after all. What do you expect the weather to be? You just come up with a way to deal with it. That’s what I’d like to talk about, finding ways to stay cool and comfortable at home during the heat of summer.

When I first moved to Denver, way back when, it didn’t seem that too many folks had home air conditioning.  Many depended on evaporative coolers (swamp coolers) or whole house fans. Many people I knew at the time just depended on an open window and a box fan. But things have changed. A combination of factors has made refrigerated air or air conditioners, the preferred way of cooling for most folks in our area over the last couple of decades. That doesn’t mean that the former favorites are no good. To the contrary, Whole house fans and swamp coolers still work very well at keeping us cool if you understand that they and even air conditioners have their shortcomings.
