There have been a lot of technical changes in air conditioning equipment over the last few years and while these changes have made the air conditioner more efficient, it has also made it more expensive to purchase.. It’s also much more expensive to operate than evaporative coolers and whole house fans. Evaporative coolers are about a third the cost of purchasing an air conditioner and can be operated much less than air conditioning but there are drawbacks. Swamp coolers produce lots of moisture that can among other things occasionally aggravate mold and mildew problems and cause some wood floors to cup and even buckle.
Whole house fans are even less expensive to purchase and operate. Operated in the evening hours, they draw cool air into the house and exhaust warm air out through the attic. The attic needs to be well ventilated for it to work effectively. The drawbacks to whole house fans are that they can’t typically be used in the daytime because they pull hot outside air into the house and when they are used at night, they tend to draw dust and outside pollutants such as pollen into the house.
There’s a new way to keep our homes cool during these hot summer days a night. You don’t need an air conditioner to take advantage of it, just a duct system with a fan that can operate independently of your furnace or air conditioner if you have one. The new technology is patented and one of those things that when you see how it works, you say why didn’t I think of that.
The process is called Air-Swap. And just as the name implies, you swap the hot air that gets trapped upstairs with the cool air that’s always in the basement or lower level of the house. It’s done by making simple changes in the duct system to mix the air and even out the temperatures upstairs and down. Folks who have had it done tell me that they’ve noticed a dramatic difference in the comfort level of their homes. Making the changes also saves about 30 per cent on energy costs. Trust me. It’s always going to be hot in the summer. But there are always ways to keep cool.
